Inaugural session of BCMACS webinar: "Grappling and Wrestling with Neoliberalism"
Neoliberalism promotes the idea of the individual as a project, urging personal responsibility for losses or successes. This ethos extends deeply into various spheres of life, including combat sports. Our discussions will explore how fighters navigate these pressures, transforming their bodies and identities in the quest for personal and professional success.
Dr. Amit Singh will explore how individuals training in gyms engage with and reflect broader neoliberal ideologies through his talk, ‘Grappling with Neoliberal Narratives of the Self & Other in the Gym’.
Dr. DeWitt King will discuss the lived experiences of Black professional wrestlers in the precarious labor market of professional wrestling in ‘Wrestling with Precarity: Deregulation, Gig Economies, and Onlyfans’.
Following the presentations, Dr. Alex Channon, a specialist in the sociology of sport and physical education with a primary focus on martial arts and combat sports, will chair a discussion. This session will delve into the broader implications of neoliberalism and examine its impact on athletes’ lives and careers.
