In this study, the intention was to achieve a more detailed and precise approach to the realities of rural areas in Asturias. This was in an attempt, firstly to differentiate the zones that can be considered urban from those that it is possible to classify as rural, and secondly, to establish among these latter various categories as a function of their socio-economic and territorial characteristics.

The variables used for this study were of several types. These include population (density, growth dynamics, age index and sex ratio); employment (active population, jobs created in the zone, extent of arable and pastoral farming activities and recent changes in these); income, and, finally, several variables of a territorial nature (accessibility, land uses and functionality).
}, number={18}, journal={Polígonos.
