The Image of China Constructed by Foreign Self-Media: An Approach to Popular Narrative in the YouTube Channel “Jabiertzo”

With the increase in international exchanges, the foreign public is eager to get close to the real China, especially the “popular narratives” that involve the daily life of ordinary people. This study investigates the “Jabiertzo” channel on YouTube to reflect on how foreign self-media can counteract these distortions from the perspective of “the Other”. Using “semantic network analysis”, it is revealed that, unlike official and dominant media, these media focus more on personal experiences of daily life, accurately reflecting the changes in Chinese society and fostering a deeper understanding. This work explores how to use the shared emotional values between different cultures to improve the interaction and sensory experience of the international public, contributing to a more vivid and multidimensional narrative of China.

Interconnection between the Chinese Nominal Classifiers and Nouns

According to the perspective of the linguistics typology, Chinese is one of the languages with classifiers system while Spanish is not. This is one of the factors that make the Spanish-speaking students feel difficult to handle the collocations of Chinese classifiers and the nouns they measure or quantify. What confuses learners most exists in the mutual selection motivations between classifiers and nouns. In these seemingly arbitrary motivations, cognitive mechanisms that reflect the way of feeling and expressing the real world with a linguistic system does work. With the analysis of the cognitive models of the syntactic structure of the classifier, this paper studies the interconnecting relationships between nominal classifiers and nouns of Chinese from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, in order to help the Spanish-speaking students to understand and manage the uses of the nominal classifiers.

An Intruder in the Discourse of Reality: Dream in The Peony Pavilion and Dream of the Red Chamber

This article compares the role of dreams in the classic Chinese literary works The Peony Pavilion and Dream of the Red Chamber, uncovering recurrent patterns in the representation of dreams. Through the identification, enumeration, and description of similar patterns in dream intervention in both works, a systematic analytical method is proposed to recognize and understand these traits, as well as their impact on the overall narrative of each work. By analyzing the influence of dreams on discourse, characters, and plot development, the study explores whether these dreams follow a specific mechanism and whether they can be systematized. From a critical perspective within the field of Sinology, this study aims to establish a solid foundation for understanding dreams in The Peony Pavilion and Dream of the Red Chamber, revealing the symbolic and narrative richness of these dream elements in classical Chinese literature.

Building a Discursive System of Integrating Chinese and Foreign Cultures: Translation Study of Poetry and Ancient Texts in the Diplomatic Interventions of Chinese Leaders

With the continuous advancement of Chinese diplomacy and the growing ties between China and other countries, new challenges and requirements have been posed for the translation of political texts, particularly the diplomatic interventions of Chinese leaders. Based on the theories of functional equivalence and political equivalence in translation, this study proposes a classification of translation techniques applicable to poems and ancient texts present in diplomatic interventions. It also constructs a Chinese-Spanish parallel corpus of Chinese poems and ancient texts found in the diplomatic interventions of Chinese leaders and analyzes the use of translation techniques such as literal translation, amplification, transposition, explanation, adaptation, and omission, employing content analysis and discourse analysis as the methodology. It is proposed that the translation should be based on the principle of functional equivalence or political equivalence, considering elements such as the recipient, the context, the purpose of the original text, and the translation. From this, appropriate translation techniques should be adopted to facilitate understanding and acceptability by the recipients while simultaneously disseminating Chinese culture, policies, and ideology, with the aim of contributing to the creation and improvement of a Chinese political discourse system that integrates foreign and Chinese cultures in Spanish-speaking countries.

Conceptual Terminological Variation in the Translation of Normative Texts from Chinese to Spanish across Different Domains and Macro-textual Parameters

This study focuses on the problems presented by conceptual terminological variation in legal translation from Chinese into Spanish, in order to observe the decision-making process at the micro-textual level. Legal language is anchored in general language, where polysemy is “a norm in language”, its existence contributing to legal language being considered ambiguous, obscure and vague. Moreover, the same concept in the source language may have different meanings and uses in the target language, depending on its context and legal domain. Thus, as a point of departure, we have translated various laws of the People’s Republic of China belonging to different domains. These translations constitute the textual corpus in which we detect and analyse problematic terms due to their ambiguity or vagueness through various situational factors and macro-textual parameters for decision-making at the micro-textual level. The work is based on the framework of the communicative theory of terminology, so that it analyses the terms in vivo and the terminological variations in context.

The Evolution of the Construction of the Image of China in the Late Ming Dynasty in Europe

During China's late Ming period, European geographical discoveries and navigational activities led to the arrival of the first European missionaries to the Chinese Empire. Many of them recorded their experiences and observations in China, and their writings contributed to the construction of China's image in European intellectuals. Among them, one of the first encyclopedic treatises on China was Historia de las Cosas más Notables, Ritos y Costumbres del Gran Reyno de la China, written by the Spanish missionary Juan González de Mendoza in 1585. In addition, the work Relación de la entrada de algunos padres de la Compañía de Jesús en la China y particulares sucessos que tuuieron y de cosas muy notables que vieron en el mismo Reyno of the Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego de Pantoja in 1602, also constitutes an important historical document that contributes to the construction of the image of China in the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe, as well as an important text in the first studies of Spanish sinology. Through the comparison and investigation of these two texts, a preliminary understanding of the process of constructing China's image in Europe can be obtained.

A Research Study about the Role of Performative Language Teaching on the Understanding of Chinese Idioms

Chengyu are essential to Chinese language and culture. They condense ancient Chinese wisdom in a story of four characters and are usually challenging for international students. In this research, a mixed method employing quantitative and qualitative techniques is adopted to investigate how using drama to perform the stories associated with the Chengyu might boost students’ understanding of them. The research was conducted at the language school in La Coruña, Spain, with 20 students aged 14-60, thirteen females and seven males of A1/HSK1 Chinese language level. The control and experimental groups comprised ten students who had to learn the same five Chengyu. One week after they learned the Chengyu, both groups took the same test to evaluate the degree of understanding of the five Chengyu. Statistical results show that students in the experimental group outperformed the ones in the control group. Therefore, we may argue that drama significantly helped students understand Chengyu.

Approach to Chinese Address Forms from the Politeness Theory: The Case of The Dream of the Red Chamber

Politeness is fundamental in daily life and cross-cultural exchanges. The differences in politeness between China and Spanish-speaking countries are manifested in the forms of address. The lack of understanding of these differences by translators can lead to misunderstandings. This article, based on politeness theory, summarizes the pragmatic functions of Chinese address forms and, through a comparative analysis of the terms in The Dream of the Red Chamber and its translations, explores their main characteristics and pragmatic functions, with the aim of contributing to the dissemination and translation of Redology in the Spanish-speaking world.
