However, articles are also accepted in other languages of the region: Spanish and Gallician-Portuguese. <p>In this paper, a study is made of the different explanatory proposals presented to date for the name of the Maragatos, analysing the plausibility of each of them on different levels (linguistic or historical) and offering a new one that relates them to the name of one of the peoples of the Suebi conglomerate, the Chatti, documented in the vicinity of the upper Rhine just before the collapse of the borders of the Roman Empire in the year 406.</p>Juan Luis García Alonso

<p>The present paper studies syncopated vs. non-syncopated 1st and 2nd person plural forms of the Ibero-Romance future subjunctive in Medieval Leonese legal documents from 1239 to 1414, like vinierdes vs. vinieredes, or mandarmos vs. mandaremos. The corpus contains all documents from the former archive of the monastery of San Pedro de Eslonza issued during the specified period (now at the Archivo Histórico Nacional in Madrid). We find that<br />(i) a precise and paleographically informed study of the original documents is necessary to obtain correct and unambiguous results, and that (ii) the regression of 1st person plural forms with syncope is most likely a result of a Castilianization process. Based on the data, we establish the working hypothesis that (iii) in Leonese scriptae in and around San Pedro de Eslonza, the Ibero-Romance -a-conjugation makes use of syncopated forms for a more extended period of time, while the -e-conjugation begins to switch earlier to non-syncopated forms, just as the -i-conjugation. The latter, additionally,<br />often shows abbreviated forms that need to be analyzed precisely before drawing conclusions on the possible presence or absence of syncope.<br /><br /></p>Stefan J. <p>In the early hours of November 28th 1945, the residents of Oliegos de Cepeda were forced by the administration to leave their homes, jobs, people, and also their ancestral lands, due to the construction of the Villameca dam. The conditions of the expropriation were particularly harsh, although at that time the sacrifice made in favour of so-called progress was regarded as positive by the community. At the end of their journey, in Castile, was the<br>distant estate of the Marqués de la Conquista, in the lands surrounding the village of Foncastín (Rueda, Valladolid) where their future was to be built. Many years later, in 2001, thanks to the good will and work of Tomás Álvarez, the first poetry contest “Verses to Oliegos” was held, which was followed by a meeting of people from La Cepeda and neighbouring areas. The main lines of this itinerant annual meeting were established that year, aiming to provide<br>a discussion forum dedicated to pay homage through poems or thoughts written in prose to the people of Oliegos who were forcibly removed from their homes. Today, nearly a quarter of a century after its beginnings and due to the wide range of topics discussed, “Verses to Oliegos” can be considered a milestone in the understanding of the history, culture and language of La Cepeda. </p>Álvaro Rosales Fernández

<p>Based on the revision of the Léxico del leonés actual, paying particular attention to its macrostructure, we attempt to offer an analysis and characterisation of the chromatic nomenclature – nouns, verbs and adjectives – that can be found in its index of entries from a semantic, diatopic and lexicographical point of view. We will also try to document the presence of these chromatic items not only in the province of León, but also in the rest of the areas<br>that constituted the former extent of Asturleonese. </p>Alejandro Junquera
