Abstract

One trial has heen carried out to investigate the value of horse bean (Vicia faba L.) as a supplementary source of protein in the ration of growing pigs. Twelve growing Large White pigs, were distributed into three groups, and fed individually from 25 to 60 kgs. body weight. Group one received a ration including horse bean meal al the 30 % level; group two was fed the same diet as group one with addition of 0,17 % DL-methionine and the third group received a control diet containing soybean oilmeal instead of the horse bean meal as vegetal protein source. All the rations were based on corn meal and contained equal amounts of fishmeal, dehydrated alfalfa meal, minerals and vitamins. Average daily weight gain was considerably lower in the pigs receiving the diet containing horse bean meal without methionine supplementation. The addition of DL-methionine (0,17 % ) improved the rate of gain to a level similar to that of pigs fed the soybean oilmeal control diet
