Abstract

Another study on the growth of the Spanish common turkey has been carried out utilizing two groups of turkeys proceeding from two different areas in the province of León. The first group was from Marne, a small village, and was formed of 3 turkey-cocks and 7 turkey-hens, and the second group was from Villaroañe, another small village, and it was formed of 3 turkey-cocks and 4 turkey-hen. When they were 12 weeks aged the average weight of turkey-cocks and turkey-hens belonging to the first group was of 2,183.6 ± 93.6 g. and 1,732.2 ± 35.1 g., respectively, whereas in the second group, at the same age, was of 2,636.6 68.1 g. and 1,925.5 ± 32.7 g., respectively. These figures and those obtained in our previous work seem to indicate that the population of Spanish turkeys presents a great genetic heterogeneity. The figures obtained coincide with the former ones, the rhythm of growth of the Spanish turkey being very high during the first weeks
