Abstract

Two tests have been carried out with 11 steers of the Schwyz and Holstein-Frisien breeds fed a granulated mixture containing 60 % and 55% of dried poultry excreta respectively in order to investigate the possible toxicity and the effect produced by dried poultry excreta as feed on the weight gain of the growing cattle. In both tests the only roughage fed was a mixture of equal volumen of lentil and wheat straw. From the data obtained it was concluded that the mixture including dried poultry excreta, did not produce either toxic nor digestive alterations in any cases. The first trial lasting 69 days was carried out with 7 Schwitz steers (6 male and 1 female) 6 months old at the beginning of the trial, using the 60 % concentrate ration. The average daily gain was 752 gr. In the second test were compared one pelleted concentrate ration containing 55% dried poultry excreta with another also pelleted mixture including the ordinary gain and oil meals instead of the dried poultry excreta but containing equal amounts of crude protein (N x 6,25). This trial lasted 100 days and comprised 4 male Holstein-Frisien steers 7-8 months old. The comparison was made according to a two groups x two periods basis. On the average the poultry excreta ration provided daily gains of 1.123 grs. but that was only 78% of the average daily gain with the control ration
