Abstract

We have carried out a quantitative and qualitative study on the population of ruminant ciliates, always at the end of long fast, in 6 lambs which were successively fed with vetch straw (Ervilia sativa), chick-pea straw (Cicer arietinum), tare straw (Vicia sativa), bean straw (Phaseolus vulgaris), vetchling straw ( Lathyrus sativus) and horse-bean straw (Vicia
faba equina) for periods of 20 days each. The extent of the population oscillated between 11,6 X 104 and 61,5 X 104 per ml of ruminant liquid. Between ELN and the number of ciliates a positive correlation was observed (y = 2,88 x - 89,18; r = 0,7). The some thing happened with raw protein (y = 8,92 x - 42,8; r = 0,66). Instead, the total ciliates showed a negative correlation with increases in raw fiber (y = 3,2 x + 153,8; r = 0,8). However, by separating the ciliates into two groups
Holotrics and Entodiniomorphous, it was shown that correlation is negative in the former (y = 43,5 - 0,88 x; r = - 0,803), while in the latter it is positive (y= 56,34 + 0,883 x; r = 0,816). These results agree with the use of respective substances by any of ciliates.
