Abstract

Kinetic stuclies on D (-) a. -thyleneaminebenzylpenicillin (methampicillin)
degradation in an aqueous solution have been carried out at 35°C, at constant ionic strength (0,5) ancl at a pH range between 1,5 ancl 9,2.

In en alkaline medium metahampicillin is slightly more stable than ampicillin, while in an acid medium both penicillins behave in practically the same way. We have proved, by various means that methampicillin is transfonnecl by acids into
ampicillin. The catalytic effect of phosphate, acetato and borate buffer was also stuclied; with the result that it was found to be the borate ion which exerted a greater catalytic effect on the hydrolysis of methampicillin.
