Abstract

Equine babesiosis ( Babesia equi) is reported in Leon (NW Spain). A hyperimmune-serum producing horse ( E. insidiosa) became sick ancl rapidly died from what was cconsidered an activation of a carrier state.

Leucocytosis, neutrophilia, monocytosis and anemia were prominent. Anaplasmoid and ring stages of the parasite were consistently found, while Malta crossforms were scarce ( 2 % ) . 41,8 % of erythrocyles harbourecl babesiae. Colangiolitic hepatitis with jaundice and reactive reticulo-hyperplastic adenitis were prominent. Spanish and Portuguese literature are reviewed and a table includling ticks so far considered responsible as vectors and present in the lberian Península is given. Color pictures from hepatic ancl lymphatic sections ancl blood smears are given.
