Abstract

Several experiments have been carried out to study the influence of the DEAE-dextran molecular weight on its adjuvant effect in swine antiaphtous vaccines, considering the postvaccination reactions, the speed of the establishment of the immunity and its duration. We have observed that practically all the vaccinated animals showed both local and general postvaccinatiön reaccions, which were more intense as the molecular weight increased. We have also observed that the DEAE-dextran adjuvant activity is proportional to its molecular weight. DEAE-dextran with a molecular weight of 500.000 or higher have to be used to obtain a protecci6n equal to or greater than 80 % at 12 weeks post-vaccination.
