Abstract

During the month of February of 1979 we diagnosed ovine encephalitis due to Listeria. The process affected to seven animals (4 % of the flock) of different age and sex, appearing all cases within eight days. The feeding of the flock consisted mainly of corn silage. There was not any new case three days after the removal of the silage from the diet.
The etiology of this process was confirmed by isolating the microbial agent by mouse intraperitoneal inoculation of fresh encephalic macerate. We could not isolate L. monocytogenes in culture neither from the fresh macerate nor from the refrigerated material, wich on the Other hand showed a great contamination. The serological studies did allow the identification of the serotype 4 ofL. monocytogenes, wich seems to be the most common one in our country.
