Report on the combat sports-related research at the 27th Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science

Abstract

This short report describes the combat sports-related research presented at the 27th Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS), as well as the special session about this topic at the event. The Annual Congress of the ECSS is one of the most important events in the field of Sport Sciences worldwide, bringing together some of the leading researchers in this area. In 2022, it was held in Seville, Spain, from August 30 to September 2. Although combat sports and martial arts have their own specific events and journals, it is important that research conducted on these topics be presented to a broader audience. This presentation can increase awareness among other scientists regarding the relevance of these topics which, in turn, may have a positive impact on obtaining grant for research and positions in universities. Therefore, this report provides a brief overview of the martial arts and combat sports-related investigations presented at this event, along with some strategies to increase their visibility.

Raquel Escobar-Molina, Department of Physical Education and Sports, Faculty of Sport Sciences, University of Granada

Raquel Escobar-Molina (Spain) is an Associate Professor and head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports, Faculty of Sport Sciences, University of Granada. She holds a 4th Dan judo black belt and has publications related to match analysis and judo performance. Email: rescobar@ugr.es

José Morales, Faculty of Psychology, Education Sciences and Sport Blanquerna, Ramon Llull University

Jose Morales (Spain) works as an Associate Professor at the Ramon Llull University of Barcelona. He has publications related to specific judo tests, judo performance and lately he has delved into the effects of judo practice on people with intellectual disabilities. He has more than 40 years of experience in judo as a coach and physical trainer, he is a 6th DAN black belt in judo. Email: josema@blanquerna.url.edu

Emerson Franchini, Martial Arts and Combat Sports Research Group, Sport Department, School of Physical Education and Sport, University of São Paulo

Emerson Franchini (Brazil) is an Associate Professor at the Department of Sport of the School of Physical Education and Sport of the University of São Paulo, Brazil, where he is the coordinator of the Martial Arts and Combat Sports Research Group. He is involved with combat sports research since 1995, investigating primarily physiological responses, testing development, and training processes for these modalities. He has worked in the training organization of judo Olympic and World Championship medal winners. He is a second dan in judo. Email: efranchini@usp.br
