The sportivization process of a martial art: the karate

Resumo

This study addresses the historical trajectory of karate, particularly in relation to the processes that favored its inclusion as one of the five modalities that will debut at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. The literature review was the methodology used in this research. Several attempts and efforts were identified to enable karate to join as a sport in the Olympic Games. It was concluded that the agents (federation leaders, presidents, coaches and athletes), along with institutions (clubs, companies, government, among others) were involved in a process that aimed to meet the requirements of the International Olympic Committee. Thus, it is possible to observe various transformations in the development of this modality that gave shape to what karate has today, which has made it a rookie modality being conditioned by market interests.

Ricardo João Sonoda-Nunes, Federal University of Paraná

PhD in Sociology from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Graduated and Master in Physical Education from the same institution. He is currently professor at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Marketing Director of the Latin American Association of Socio-Cultural Studies of Sports (ALESDE), Secretary General of the Latin American Association of Sport Management (ALGEDE) and Scientific Coordinator of the Management of Sport Area at the Latin American Association of Sports. Sport Sciences, Physical Education and Danza (ALCIDED). He is a researcher at the Center for Research on Sport, Leisure and Society of UFPR and the Civilizing Processes Group of the State University of Londrina (UEL), both registered with CNPq. He is a member of the Brazilian College of Sport Sciences (CBCE), the North American Society for Sociology of Sport / NASSS, the International Sociology of Sport Association / ISSA, the International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society / IMACSSS and the Brazilian Management Association. do Esporte / ABRAGESP.
