Abstract

The purpose of this article is to bring to light the remarkable importance of precinematic media in the way that Sheridan Le Fanu structured his most famous work, Carmilla (1872), as well as its key part in the characterization of the vampire protagonist and her sexuality. The paper will also analyze the prevalence of the lanternist imagery in some of the novella’s most notorious audiovisual adaptations and its link with the representation of vampirism and lesbianism.
