Abstract

A study has been carried out on the chemical composition of 50 samples of hay, picked out in the barns troughout the mon-tainous area in the León Province (Spain).
The average crude protein content of the hays Was 8,8 % on a dry matter basis With a mínimum of 6,5 % and a maximum of 12,2 % . These figures are considered adequate for hays of medium quality.
The average crude fiber content was 33,6 % (29,1 % --40,3 % ) and is considered very high, the same as the average lignin content 9,2 %, similar to the corresponding figures in the straws of the leguminous crops (for grain) in cultivated in North Castile.
Regarding the mineral composition, the hays had a 0,9 % of Ca. and 0,20 % of Mg., considered as adequate but only a 0,1 % of P, elearly below the optimum level.
