Abstract

This work analyses celebrations of the city of Montevideo at the beginning of the reign of Carlos IV of Spain. It describes ornaments and events related with the celebrations. It focuses on aesthetic features of the events, in a time of change of the taste artistic, a half-way between baroque culture and age of enlightened period. These festivities also help to discover the rule of the city in the historic context of this period for Hispanic monarchy, and its aspirations in order to become an outstanding port of America.
