Las Etimologías de San Isidoro de Sevilla (siglo VII d.C., España) y el Shuowen Jiezi de Xu Shen (siglo II d.C., China) son los diccionarios etimológicos más antiguos tanto del mundo oriental como del occidental, así como los materiales didácticos básicos más importantes en los sistemas educativos de sus respectivos países. Nacieron en un contexto similar, al comienzo de una nueva era tras la devastación de las civilizaciones antiguas. Ambos autores fueron los más eruditos de su época y se esforzaron por rastrear el conocimiento y el aprendizaje clásicos desde sus etimologías. Si comparamos el trasfondo, la idea principal, el estilo, el contenido y las características de ambos autores, así como sus diferencias y similitudes culturales (incluyendo los valores, las nociones de género, roles sociales, el contexto, los significados simbólicos y las perspectivas compartidas), podremos comprender, de forma más profunda, la relación que existía entre las civilizaciones orientales y occidentales. Esta perspectiva histórica y cultural no solo servirá para entender mejor el desarrollo de la civilización humana, sino que también puede proporcionar nuevas inspiraciones para la enseñanza intercultural y de segundas lenguas.
