In 1975, the First World Conference on Women, also known as the World Conference of the International Women's Year, was held in Mexico City. It was the first international conference held by the United Nations that focused exclusively on issues related to the condition of women in the world and marked a turning point in political directives.
Five decades later, the journal Gender Issues: Equality and Difference proposes this special issue entitled "50 Years of Feminism in Spain and Latin America." We intend to address, from different perspectives, issues related to theory, debates, legislation and institutional policies, advances and setbacks, the agenda of yesterday and today, both in Spain and in Latin America, as well as to gloss the figure of great representatives of Ibero-American feminism.
The underlying idea, in addition to the importance of reconstructing and recording what has been achieved and how it has been done, is that beyond the determining influence of the Anglo-Saxon world, with its idiosyncrasy and its own debates that export and almost impose and are experienced as their own, when they are not, feminism in the Spanish language, both in theory and in its large mobilizations and its own forms of expression, has its own voice to understand and analyze the self-awareness and the current moment of one of the social movements that has contributed most to outlining the debates on knowledge, political action and the ideals of Equality, Justice and Freedom.
