伊西多罗的《词源》（公元7世纪，西班牙）和许慎的《说文解字》（公元2世纪，中国）分别为东西方世界最早的语源辞书，以及其后各自教育系统中极为重要的基础教材。它们诞生的时代背景类似，都是古代文明遭受重创之后新时期的开端。作者同为当时最博学的学者，都着力从语源上对古典知识与学问进行溯源整理。通过对二者成书背景、主旨、体例、内容以及其特点以及它们的特点和文化背景（包括价值观、性别观念与社会角色、语境、象征意义和共同观点）进行深入对比分析，我们不仅能够更深刻地理解语词背后东西方文明的差异与共性，以及人类文明的发展轨迹，而且这种历史与文化的视角还能为跨文化和第二语言教学提供新的启示。
