Author Guidelines

Articles submitted for publication in Cuestiones de Género must strictly adhere to the guidelines contained in the following sections. Manuscripts that do not comply will be rejected. Only original and unpublished works that have not been previously published and that have not been submitted to other journals will be accepted.

EDITORIAL LINE

Cuestiones de Género: de la igualdad y la diferencia (Gender Issues: On Equality and Difference ), is an annual, open-access academic publication created at the initiative of the Interdisciplinary Seminar on Women's Studies at the University of León.

It welcomes original and unpublished contributions in any of the official languages of the European Union. All articles must include an abstract and keywords in English.

It is open to all research, scientific communication, or original works in the area of feminist and women's studies. The journal aims to strengthen an academic and interdisciplinary space for inquiry, discussion, and debate on gender.

The journal is fundamentally a means of disseminating research and, in this regard, meets the criteria required for scientific journals. However, in a few publications, the "Guest Articles" section has been included, which includes introductory contributions from renowned authors to give the issue greater consistency.

Cuestiones de Género strives to achieve the highest possible quality in its publications, applying strict peer-review criteria.

We recommend the use of gender-neutral and inclusive language in texts submitted for publication.

We encourage authors to use a gender perspective at all stages of the research process. When appropriate, studies recommend considering the relevance of incorporating sex or gender as an analytical variable and establishing whether this has influenced the results obtained. Likewise, results are expected to mention differences between the sexes or those due to gender relations, or, conversely, the absence of differences.

In order to highlight the work of women and men, the full names of the people cited in the text, including their first names, should be included in the reference list.

JOURNAL FORMAT

Cuestiones de Género is an open-access publication and will not charge authors for publishing. Making research freely available to the public fosters greater global knowledge sharing, enhances the visibility of authorship and work, and facilitates early citation. Articles will be published online in HTML and PDF formats and will be made available to readers, without restrictions, immediately after online publication.

Types of contributions

a) Articles

If they include research, scientific communication, or original works submitted to the Special Issue, Open Forum, and About sections.

These are original and unpublished texts that follow the standard academic structure of scientific journals, consisting of the title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish and English; introduction, objectives; methodology; presentation of the results and discussion thereof; final conclusions; and bibliography.

Articles must have a minimum length of 5,000 words and a maximum of 10,000 words, including all sections and appendices. Articles that exceed this limit will not be accepted.

They must follow the presentation format available in the download template.

It is advisable not to overuse notes and, if essential, to use the fewest possible numbers, always placing them at the end of the document.

Final references must be presented in alphabetical order and must include the authors' first names.

When the reference has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), it must be indicated at the end of the reference. Ensure that links to electronic references work correctly.

The individual sections that divide the text must be numbered and must be in bold lowercase type.

The Editorial Board may reject an article without initiating the external review process if it considers that it does not comply with the standards, does not fit the thematic profile of the journal, or is considered to be of insufficient quality.

PHASE 1: Initial Evaluation

These works will go through two review phases:

In this phase, the articles must meet certain minimum requirements:

- Be original and unpublished;

- The article structure must include the following minimum sections: introduction, objectives, methodology, results, and conclusion;

- The abstract must include the following aspects: objectives, methodology, results, and conclusion;

- In-text citations and bibliography must strictly comply with the journal's standards;

- The manuscript must pass Turnitin’s review (the results of the article's review by the program must not exceed a similarity of 20%).

PHASE 2: Double-blind external peer review

Manuscripts that pass the initial evaluation (pre-review) will be sent for external review using the usual "double-blind peer review" system. At least two specialists in the same field of knowledge as the work will be sent for external review.

The anonymity of the participants will be maintained at all times, both in the authorship of the manuscript and in the evaluation process.

The Editorial Board will analyze the evaluations and decide whether to approve or reject the article.

The author will be informed of the acceptance or rejection of their contribution within a maximum of 4 (four) months from the closing date of the call for papers.

b) Guest Articles

This includes papers submitted after being invited by the Coordinator of the issues of each journal.

The articles will be sent to the Guest Articles section.

These are original texts, covering subjects related to the monograph's theme, and must include the title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish and English. Citations in the text and the final bibliography must follow the Journal's guidelines.

Articles must have a minimum length of 5,000 words and a maximum of 10,000 words, including all sections and appendices.

They must follow the presentation format available in the downloadable template.

It is advisable not to overuse notes and, if essential, to use the fewest possible numbers, always placing them at the end of the document.

Final references must be presented in alphabetical order and must include the authors' first names.

When the reference has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), it must be indicated at the end. Please ensure that the links to electronic references work correctly.

The individual sections that divide the text must be numbered and used in bold lowercase font.

Invited articles are not submitted for external, double-blind peer review. However, they will be reviewed by the Coordinator, Editorial Board, and Technical Reviewer, who will assess formatting issues, and the authors will be informed if they need to make changes to the text.

c) Reviews

These are texts that review books, films, or works related to feminist studies, women's studies, or gender issues.

Reviews must have a maximum length of 2,500 words, including tables, figures, notes, photos, and bibliographies. Only very brief documentary appendices will be accepted, and only in cases justified by the author. This justification must be approved by the Editorial Board.

Book Reviews must include the following information: Book title, authorship, location, publisher, year, reviewer's name, institutional affiliation or workplace, and email address.

Film Reviews must include the following information: Film title (in Spanish and the film's official language), director, producer, year of release, cast (main actors and actresses), and genre.

These submissions must follow the presentation format available in the downloadable template.

It is advisable not to overuse notes and, if necessary, to use as few as possible, always placing them at the end of the document.

Final references should be presented in alphabetical order and should include the authors' first names.

When the reference includes a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), it should be indicated at the end. Ensure that links to electronic references work correctly.

The individual sections that divide the text should be numbered and should be in bold lowercase type.

Submitted reviews will be reviewed by the Coordinator, Editorial Board, and the Technical Reviewer, who will assess issues of form and editorial policy. Authors will be informed if they require modifications to the text. The decision to publish reviews is made by the Coordinator of the issue, advised by the Editorial Board.

HOW TO CIT WTHIN THE TEXT

Cuestiones de Género Journal uses the Harvard style for citations and bibliographic references. In Harvard style, the in-text citation is formatted as author-date, and the bibliographic references appear at the end of the document in the form of a list ordered by author and year of publication.

This format uses the author-date citation system between the text of the document (Indirect citation: Poncela, 2011; Direct citation: Blanco García, 2021: 23) and the bibliographic references at the end of the document in the form of a list ordered by author and year of publication.

Direct quotes:

Quotes of up to 4 lines will be integrated into the text indicated by double quotation marks and quotes that exceed 4 lines will be presented in a paragraph separated from the text by a line, also in double quotation marks.

Indirect quotes:

PREPARATION OF SUPPLEMENTARY FILES

Before submitting, you must have the following files, in addition to the article text:

Images and graphics in a single compressed file in ZIP or RAR format.

Supplementary files must be uploaded as separate components of the article.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

Manuscripts will be submitted electronically through the Cuestiones de Género Journal Platform. Authors must register with a username and password. The journal will not accept manuscripts that do not adhere to the format and style guidelines stipulated in the current Guidelines for Authors, are submitted after the deadline established in the specific Calls for Papers, or are sent by mail.

Manuscripts submitted in a language other than Spanish must select the language of the original from the drop-down list when submitting. If the language is not selected at this time, the title will automatically appear in Spanish in the journal's index upon publication.

As Cuestiones de Género Journal is an annual journal, submissions will be received throughout the year. The closing date for each call is February 28th of each year, unless, exceptionally, it is postponed by 15 days. The Journal will acknowledge receipt of manuscripts within a maximum of 30 (thirty) days from the closing date of the call.

FIRST-STAGE EVALUATION

Once the articles have been received, they will be reviewed by the Coordinating Committee and the Editorial Board to determine their thematic relevance and compliance with the journal's established editorial standards. Failure to meet any of the aforementioned parameters, as well as the lack of any type of documentation or late submission, may result in the editors rejecting a manuscript in the first instance.

Please note that for initial acceptance, manuscripts must meet a series of minimum requirements, which are detailed below.

The essential requirements for passing the first review phase are:

- Articles must be unpublished, the result of research, scientific communication, or original creation.

- The article must be structured within the text body to include the following duly numbered sections: introduction, objectivesmethodologyresults and conclusion.

- The abstract must include the following aspects: objectivesmethodologyresults and conclusion.

- That the in-text citations and bibliography strictly comply with the journal's standards.

- That the manuscript passes Turnitin's analysis (the results of the article's review by the program must not exceed a similarity of 20%).

If the manuscript does not meet any of the aforementioned requirements, it will be rejected in the first instance.

If the Editorial Board considers that there are minor deficiencies and that the necessary changes are minor, they will give the author the opportunity to correct them and resubmit the revised manuscript within a maximum of two (2) days.

Articles that meet all the requirements will move on to the next phase. In any of the above cases, the Journal will send the author a communication regarding the editorial decisions.

EXTERNAL DOUBLE-BLIND PEER REVIEW

In order to ensure content quality, manuscripts belonging to the "Monograph," "Open Forum," and "About" sections that have passed formal review by the editors will be subject to double-blind peer review by external specialists, following the guidelines of the Double-Blind Peer Review System for the evaluation of scientific works. It should be noted that the development of this stage is necessarily conditioned by the response times of the multiple people involved.

The reviewers will be preselected by the editors, according to their scientific level and thematic affinity with the manuscript to be reviewed. The identity of the reviewers cannot be revealed to the authors, guaranteeing the absolute anonymity of the evaluation reports and opinions. In accordance with the recommendations of the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE), reviews should be conducted based on the following criteria: scientific relevance, originality, clarity, and pertinence. Reviewers may suggest any modifications they consider significant and pertinent, related to the content, structure, objectives, methodology, results, interpretations, and/or bibliographic references. These modifications must:

a) Be based on the criteria defined in the corresponding evaluation form;

b) Be objective and respectful of dissent; and

c) Promote critical construction and exchange to guide and improve contributions.

The evaluation process will consist of a maximum of two (2) rounds of peer review. During the first round, manuscripts will be reviewed by two (2) reviewers who will have a period of 30 (thirty) days to complete the evaluation and submit their report.

At this stage, each reviewer's opinion may result in one of the following outcomes:

a) Accept the submission. The work must be published as is, without any improvements.

b) Publishable with modifications. The work can be published after making a series of changes that will help improve its content.

c) Resubmit for revision. The work must be modified with the proposed changes and then reviewed again by you.

d) Not publishable. The work is deficient in content and, therefore, does not meet the requirements for publication.

If there are significant discrepancies between the two opinions, the Editorial Committee will review the arguments offered by the specialists and may submit the manuscript for review by a third reviewer.

If the submissions receive favorable evaluations, the papers will be sent back to the authors so that they can make all the requested corrections or modifications within 7 (seven) days.

Once the relevant modifications have been made, the authors must submit the corrected manuscript along with a Disclaimer detailing each and every one of the changes made (both minor and major). If the authors disagree with any of the comments made by the reviewers, they must justify their position in said document. The Disclaimer will be delivered to the editors in a separate file and must be signed by each and every author. The corrected manuscript file must be returned with the change log so that the Editorial Board and reviewers can corroborate the minor and major modifications made.

Finally, if any of the reviewers requested major changes, the manuscript will be submitted to a second round of review to verify whether the comments made in the first round were considered. In this case, the final opinions can only be of two (2) types: Accepted or Rejected.

ACCEPTANCE OR REJECTION OF THE MANUSCRIPT

The final decision regarding the acceptance or rejection of a manuscript will be the final decision of the Editorial Committee, and this is a final decision. The decision will be communicated to the authors within 15 (fifteen) days of receiving the final version of the manuscripts approved by the reviewers. Acceptance will be subject to the following criteria:

a) Obtaining two favorable evaluations;

b) Consideration of all corrections and/or suggestions made by reviewers and editors;

c) Compliance with editorial standards; and

d) Compliance with the deadlines established by the journal.

Once the Editorial Committee decides to accept a manuscript, it will proceed to the editing or editorial production stage. It may no longer be withdrawn by the authors, and no further changes may be made to the author's composition.

EDITORIAL PRODUCTION

During this stage, the Editorial Committee will handle the following tasks:

a) Copyediting;

b) Layout;

c) Proofreading;

d) Correcting the metadata of the final version.

The team will complete this process within 30 (thirty) days. Each process is described below.

a) Copyediting

The editorial team will review the text for spelling, grammatical, syntactical, and semantic errors, as well as the presence of filler words and the appropriate use of vocabulary specific to the discipline.

b) Layout

The formal layout of all content for the current issue will be completed. For an editorial publication to be attractive, it is important to maintain a balance between content and presentation, thus ensuring aesthetic and informational consistency. Consequently, this step involves the organization, distribution, and presentation of each of the textual and graphic elements that comprise each work.

c) Proofreading

After layout, galley proofs will be generated for each manuscript. These are preliminary versions of the works to be published, prepared to detect typographical and/or layout errors before final publication. These will be made available to the authors, who will have a maximum of two (2) days to review the manuscripts and submit their comments. At this stage, only formal and typographical errors may be corrected, but rewriting of the text or any other changes to the content of the manuscripts (including tables and figures) will not be permitted.

d) Correction of metadata for the final version

Metadata includes data that describe other data. These refer to the description of each manuscript's properties, facilitate interoperability through the application of standards and protocols shared with other systems, and offer broader contexts of meaning in search engines, facilitating efficient information retrieval. Thus, once the galley proofs have been corrected, the Editorial Committee will proceed to correct and unify all the metadata associated with the final version of each work.

PUBLICATION

The publication of Cuestiones de Género Journal is annual and has been carried out in June, without interruption, since its creation in 2005.
